Wikipedia describes flirting as a playful, romantic or sexual overture by one person to another subtly indicating an interest in a deeper relationship with the other person, and can involve verbal communication as well as body language. Body language can include flicking the hair, eye contact, brief touching, open stances, proximity etc. Verbal communication of interest can include the vocal tone, such as pace, volume, intonation. Flirting has been with us for ages, and we're quite good at it. Well, most of us. You might called some sort of a ritual, similar to those used in the wild. If you want to attract attention of an opposite sex, or indicate that you are interested in more then casual conversation – you use flirting techniques.

Those techniques can vary greatly, depending on the person, surroundings, or culture. It also can be limited or extended by your social status. It's no secret then men with power or wealth use that to their advantage.

Although flirting comes natural for most of us, it has some rules, that even involve, the length of a stare, the distance between persons when talking, head tilts, smiles and etc.

Where can you flirt?

Well mostly anywhere. Although I would be careful flirting at work with colleagues due to legal implications. Other then that, if you feel like it, you can flirt anywhere any time. In most cultures that is not considered an offense, but you should double check the rules of engagement in different cultures before unleashing your flirting powers. Flirting can have different approach in different countries. So you might be embarrassed or get hurt. I don't think it will come to that, but in order to increase the effect of flirting you should find out what are the common flirting techniques in that country.

Most of the time flirting occurs in designated places: bars, clubs, parties. People feel more relaxed and more open to flirting, which means they you can boost up your flirting without having to worry about the reaction. In other places, such as streets, shops, libraries, gyms people have other priorities, they are focused on a task at hand: shopping, working out, rushing to work and etc. This mean you have to carefully pick your flirting techniques, it has to be more settle. Otherwise you could be mistake for some weirdo, desperate for date or attention, or even a stocker.

Online flirting

Flirting is an indispensable aspect of life. However it’s not just a game, it can be a ‘dangerous’ game where people move closer and closer to a borderline, where they may or may not cross this line, it is like playing with fire. By flirting you both engage in some sort of ritual, which can take you further and further, and at some point you will have to choose if you want to cross a line or not. Although it's not easy to start engaging each other into flirting, it also reveals a lot about you, and to some people it might be too much. It might be out of their comfort zone. This is where online flirting comes in. People can express themselves more freely; it gives people the possibility to act more freely. This seems obvious: behind a laptop or a computer, nobody sees them; hence, if they do not like it, going away is easy.

But how do you flirt online? There are enough articles, websites, books, etc. which explain how to flirt online. Although there might be a lot of reasons why people go online and what are they looking, but most would agree that the other person should, among others, be intelligent, honest, interesting, humorous, and so on.

The biggest disadvantage of online flirting is that at some point it has to transform to offline dating. And at that point almost all people will ask themselves 'is it worth?', 'what's there to loose?'. This questioning might take some time.

Since online dating sites are flourishing, it means that online flirting pays off, and most of the people do meet offline, and have normal relationships, and later on marry. Although, offline meeting, can hurt the relationship that was going on great online. Usually it happens, due to high expectations – not everyone is the same online and offline. Of course, it might be that the person offline is even better that was expected. Then the relationship gets more intense and more interesting.
